Bio & CV

My name is Julie Sutherland. I’m deeply interested in the capacity of literature to effect change in the human spirit. I am also committed to drawing on arts and humanities to address current social and environmental challenges.

After completing an MA and PhD in English Studies and Modern European Languages at the University of Durham in the UK, I returned to my home country, Canada, where I taught English literature to university students. However, I felt driven to apply literature more practically to human health and social justice. I now work in the Intergovernmental Affairs and Indigenous Relations Division of the Public Health Agency of Canada. I also facilitate applied humanities workshops and other literary sessions for the London Literary Salon.

I have been recognized for teaching excellence in Canada and the UK. I have a long history of leading sessions on Shakespeare, poetry and other literature in educational and non-educational settings in Canada, the US, the UK and online. I have also worked in theatre production and administration and even managed to play Titania, Queen of the Faeries, in a semi-professional production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream!
